Getting Pictures for your BlogJust in case it’s what you’re thinking, this is not a sponsored post. This is me talking about the website from the goodness of my heart trying to help other web people out. Although I don’t actively use images for my blog, I’ve often needed images for other websites or other projects. I suppose it’s hard to put an illustration for most web concepts that I talk about… For the sake of this post, I included a picture from the website.

Without further ado…

stock.xchng

It’s located at http://www.sxc.hu. Stock Exchange is a website where people can upload their own images to be publicly available for download. These images are royalty-free and free stock photography. The uploader can choose some restrictions such as alerting the photographer or crediting the photographer when the photo is used. A majority of photos don’t have these restrictions, but there are some that do.

If you’re uploading your own photos, they do have to go through moderation to meet quality standards.

There’s only one catch. You need to register an account. That’s it. No credit cards, nothing. Most images have enough resolution to fill up the biggest screen so that’s definitely not something you need to worry about.

All it takes is the ability to log in and search for keywords.

Some downsides that are easily overcome:
Some of the images aren’t spectacular, so you may have to sift quite a bit.
You’ll have to try various keywords as some of its users don’t speak English well.

That’s all for now.  Hope that helps.

    Yeah, sxc.hu is great!

I use it in all my photoshop tutorials where I have to use a real image and not just graphics.

    Nice post ;)
