I’m currently looking into why my portfolio site is not ranked above a jeweler’s website for the keywords “patrick burt” on Google. The jeweler’s site is currently ranked as Number 1, and I’m kicking around in 3 or 4 +. Here’s a table comparing both elements:
| ELEMENT | OILDRIP.COM (Me) | PATRICKBURT.NET (The Competition) |
| PageRank | 4 | 2 |
| Keywords In Meta Tags | Yes | Yes |
| Domain Name Age | 5.5 Years | 2 Years |
| Keywords In Domain Name | No | Yes |
| Backlinks | 4000 | 2 |
| Lots of Javascript | Yes | Yes |
| Use Of Proper Header Tags | Yes | Yes |
| Text Volume | Less | More |
| Number of Pages | 3 | 6 |
Setting up this table, I can see which areas I need to improve on. I’m considering writing some content about myself, maybe a short auto-biography that I can publish on my portfolio’s domain name that isn’t used in Flash, but is used in the Flash’s alternate ext. This should bring up the number of pages on my domain and boost up content. I suspect I may be overusing the “Patrick Burt” keyword, so I’ll see what I can do.
There’s not much I can do in terms of the domain without buying a domain and having to build PageRank and backlinks all over again. Hopefully I’ll make some progress and keep everyone updated.
