Given that my previous article on Web Design Quick Tips was a success, I figure it’s a good idea to follow up with a similar article on Web Development. Without further ado, here are 10 Web Development Quick Tips, in no particular order.

UPDATE: Here is part 2 of the 10 Web Development Tips series.

1 – Optimize Your Images Well
Know JPGs and GIFs like the back of your hand. Do a “Save For Web” from Photoshop. Manually edit the GIF’s color channels and gradually adjust the JPG’s quality slider. If possible, check your JPGs on a crisp LCD monitor.

2 – Keep Filesize In Mind
Noone wants to have to go back and revise an already developed website because it’s three times the filesize it could be. Optimize Your Images, Delete excess code and don’t use tables.

3 – Don’t Do It Later
If ever you’re thinking: “Bah, I don’t need to do this. This is just a quick website.” Whatever it was you’re talking about, do it. Chances are whatever you’re talking about is a remedial task that will end up saving you time if ever you have to open up your files again. It can include sorting out your code in functions, naming layers properly in Photoshop and always using a CSS file.

4 – Know Shorthand CSS
If you write some CSS by hand, know the shortcuts. I wrote a quick article that details some ways (including one-line CSS) you can minimalize and simplify your CSS.

5 – Test and Validate As You Develop
You don’t want to be involved in a rush project and right before you send the project to the client, you test it in Internet Explorer 6 and it looks disgusting. Test Your Site on All Browsers and Validate, Validate, Validate.

6 – SEO From Day One
Once you get the hang of it, this should come naturally. Rewriting code once you’re done development is just wasting your time

7 – Think About Monetization
If monetization is one of the goals of your website, remember to try to build in some elements. If you want to be able to put a Skycraper ad unit once your site is established, keep in mind the dimensions that are required so you don’t end up having to rework everything.

8 – Know Browser Constraints
This goes hand and hand with testing and validating your website. Once you know certain browser constraints such as issues you might have CSS elements being different sizes in different browsers, you can avoid huge headaches.

9 – Know Simple php/asp Functions
In the event that you build static HTML pages, even just using the include function and include files will save you time when it comes to updating content or design elements across all pages. This can be anything from titles, to meta tags, to navigations.

10 – Indent Your Code

This is something that goes with the 3rd tip: Don’t Do It Later. It’s so important it deserved its own tip. Indenting your code helps troubleshoot and helps you when open up a project you’ve worked on long ago.

Hope that helps. :)
