Programming is something that can be done in an application as simple as Notepad or TextEdit, however, there are programs out there that will make your life easier.

Notepad++ - This software is your lightweight freeware alternative. It supports color coding for over 30 languages and makes it easy for you to edit how you want your color coding to work. I use this software myself if I need to make quick changes. I use Notepad++ in conjunction with Dreamweaver because if I need to make simple changes, N++ starts up quickly and performs very quickly.

BBEdit / TextWrangler - Both of these software packages are developed by the same company. TextWrangler is a free, light version of BBEdit. They’re similar to Notepad++ due to the fact that they are enhanced text editors. Since they’re so simple, they’ve perform well and are stuffed with text manipulation features. TextFactory is one feature that made it extremely easy to perform changes on huge or numerous documents. This is THE alternative for Mac OSX users. (Mac Only)

Adobe Dreamweaver - If you’ve got money laying around, Dreamweaver does all the basics, and more. It integrates a lot of the required aspects of web development together. It makes it easy to add CSS, manage sites as a whole, build templates, etc. It’s fairly visual as well. It also gives you a fairly accurate What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) view. The downside is its cost.

Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express - Microsoft’s Express tag denotes that fact that it’s a lightweight version of the paid software. (aka it’s free). If you’re just starting out, I’d highly recommend this software for developing ASP.NET. The drag-and-drop functionality definitely makes this program inch ahead of the competition. The downside is how many languages it supports. (Windows Only)

Hope that helps. :)
